Wiltshire Horn sheep as a crossing breed

Other sires on Wiltshire Horn females

The Wiltshire Horn ewe is a large framed ewe and accepts rams from all the widely used terminal breeds to produce top quality prime lamb.  Wiltshire Horn ewes are now being used in many commercial flocks where, with careful selective breeding, they are able to produce wool shedding replacements.

We used a Charolais ram in 2011 when all of our females were first lambers, the rationale being that the arrow shape of the Charolais would be more streamlined on the way out.  We found the pedigree mating to be equally easy-lambing on first lambers and the second and subsequent lambers lambed the Texel cross with no more difficulty.

This lamb is 45kg at exactly 3 months old. He was the first lamb of a pedigree Wiltshire Horn theave by a Charolais ram.
The lamb on the left (by a Charolais ram) reached 45kg in exactly 3 months with no creep feed.

His pedigree Wiltshire Horn mother (by Boxes Dramatic) was a first lambing theave, was solely on forage (no compound feed) and grew on herself.

To the right is our pedigree Texel tup (UDA1100165) purchased from Amersham Texels in late Summer 2012.  He is an absolute powerhouse of muscle with excellent leg placement and a wonderful temperament.  Butt just isn't in his vocabulary!

Wiltshire Horn sires on other breeds

For those breeding their own ewes, the Wiltshire Horn ram offers the opportunity to breed shedding ewes.
Wiltshire sired lambs are noticeably quicker on their feet and more lively and active than those sired by Down rams.   This valuable trait has long been recognised and Wiltshire rams have proved popular for use on ewe lambs for this reason.   The Wiltshire Horn is gaining increasing recognition from commercial producers both as a useful terminal sire in today's market as well from those seeking to breed the wool off their flock.
